Student Activities

We at Van Asselt feel that participation in student-oriented activities is a vital part of a student’s education. Therefore, a wide range of activities are provided, including the following:

Van Asselt Music Makers (VAMM)

Activity Coordinator - Mr. Paul Fowler
                              (206) 252-7542

VAMM is a music group made up of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders that perform many times throughout the school year. Their signature lime green shirts and dark pants are known throughout the city. VAMM is a choir made up of over 65 students that also perform on instruments. Students rehearse twice a week during their lunch times and recess. With a very heavy performance schedule, the students are expected to memorize many different types of songs as well as create new songs to be performed as well. VAMM!

Chess Club

Activity Coordinator - Mr. Ken Berry
                              (206) 252-7500

Every week on Fridays students from Kindergarten to 5th grade gather to play chess for an hour. All learn about basic strategies and about Algebraic notation for recording moves. All students are welcome. A student new to chess will learn how to move each piece and the rules of the game.

There are two K-8 citywide tournaments with hundreds of participants from throughout King County that Van Asselt students have participated in each year. Any student who wins at least three out of five games at a city tournament qualifies to compete in the WA ST Chess Tournament.

In 2011, for the first time, we had students go to the state tournament, a 4th grader, Tyler Sevilla, and a 5th grader, Peter Lam. Ken Berry is the Chess Club Coordinator.

After School Sports

Activity Coordinator - Mr. Rob Tallmadge
