    Purpose Statement


    The Van Asselt Library is a warm and welcoming place fostering in students a love for reading.  The library encourages students to read for purpose and for pleasure.  The librarian teaches lessons about reading strategies and research and technology skills related to Common Core State Standards.    

    The library also functions as a second computer lab.  Students use these computers for research and writing as well as practicing typing skills using Typing Agent. The Van Asselt Library welcomes families to support their students in 21st century learning.

    Scholastic Book Fair at Van Asselt - December 12 -16, 2016
    There will be evening events for families to explore and but items from the Book Fair. More information will be sent home in November.


    Global Reading Challenge

    Van Asselt students are gearing up for the Seattle Public Library Global Reading Challenge. Over 60 students are participating on 11 teams for the largest challenge at Van Asselt.  The winners of the challenge will advance to the semi-finals at the Seattle Public Library.  

    Team players keep reading over break.  Take the quizzes which are online.  Just press the link below.  You can take the test more than once.

    Thursday, February 11, 2016:  GRC Semi-Finals to be held in the cafeteria.

    5th Grade GRC Participants:  Margi Preus, author of "Heart of a Samurai" and "The Bamboo Sword", the companion to "Heart of a Samurai".  January 28, 2016
